Troubleshooting

Blank window or “Something went wrong”

First, ensure your RAM usage isn’t nearing 100%. This can cause the window to go blank until resized.

If you can’t start Recollectr, or you’re seeing the message, “Something went wrong”, your best bet is to restore your most recent Recollectr backup.

Recollectr takes a backup on startup, every 12 hours in case there’s any sort of problem. While problems are rare, Recollectr is still in beta. Barring hard-disk corruption restoring a backup should fix any problem, although you may be set back by up to 12 hours if you don’t have sync enabled.

  1. Open Windows File Explorer
  2. Navigate to C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Recollectr\storage\
  3. Rename state.json to state.json.bak
  4. Navigate to C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Recollectr\storage\backup\
  5. Copy the latest JSON file with a non-zero size
  6. Paste the file into C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Recollectr\storage\
  7. Rename the pasted file to state.json
  1. Open Finder
  2. Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Recollectr/storage/
  3. Rename state.json to state.json.bak
  4. Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Recollectr/storage/backup/
  5. Copy the latest JSON file with a non-zero size
  6. Paste the file into ~/Library/Application Support/Recollectr/storage/
  7. Rename the pasted file to state.json

The instructions below are written for users who installed Recollectr using an AppImage. If you installed Recollectr using Snap, follow the instructions below, but instead of ~/.config/Recollectr/storage/use ~/snap/recollectr/current/.config/Recollectr/storage/

  1. Open your preferred file explorer
  2. Navigate to ~/.config/Recollectr/storage/
  3. Rename state.json to state.json.bak
  4. Navigate to ~/.config/Recollectr/storage/backup/
  5. Copy the latest JSON file with a non-zero size
  6. Paste the file into ~/.config/Recollectr/storage/
  7. Rename the pasted file to state.json

“Update available” – but Recollectr doesn’t update

This can happen when an update download is interrupted. To resolve it, you’ll just need to delete the incomplete files and restart Recollectr. To do this, simply delete the entire contents of the folder (see below for location.)

Once you see “Update available” again, Recollectr should successfully update the next time you quit.

The update files can be found at:

  • Window: C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\recollectr-updater\pending
  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Caches/recollectr-updater/pending/
  • Linux: ~/.cache/recollectr-updater/pending/

Duplicated reminders

When using the Recollectr Web Extender extension, in rare cases Recollectr may have trouble communicating with it. This can result in duplicate reminders.

To resolve this, open your web browser, find the Recollectr Web Extender extension in your browser, and toggle it off, and then back on.

If the issue persists, also restart Recollectr.

Ghost window outline

This issue can occur on Windows machines, especially those with integrated graphics, or virtual machines.

We’re working to resolve this, but it’s a slow process. In the meantime, all we can recommend is hitting the global hotkey to hide/show Recollectr, which will remove the outline.

Getting your issue resolved permanently

In an ideal world, there would never be software bugs, but this isn’t an ideal world and Recollectr is still in beta. If you encounter an error, the best thing you can do is to send us your log file to help us get the issue resolved!

See this page to find the location of the log file on your operating system.
